ATLAS AISLEFlorida Keys
Artist Proof 45 • Limited Edition 495

TIME: SUNSET
I always look for elements of the unexpected within my work – an off-the-beaten-track location, an unusual angle, an unexpected change in the light. In this image, which I shot at sunset after a short, sudden downpour, it wasn’t just the magnificent painted skies that piqued my imagination, but also the range of textural contrasts within the scene. Even though I had a very short window of time before the light began to fail, I knew I was in the presence of a creative possibility too good to miss.
The sun had already dropped below the horizon, illuminating the clouds from beneath with a profusion of amber light and etching incredible detail into the foreground of wet sand and the gnarled timber walkway. I was immediately struck by the intricate composition of what seems at first glance like such a simple scene. The palm trees and timber pillars create the perfect framing and perspective to lead the eye along the pathway, over the creamy white sand and into the depthless blue of the Atlantic. To me it feels timeless, as if it could have been conceived for the Titan Atlas himself and you could step into the frame and walk down the Atlas Aisle to discover what lies beyond the end of the ocean. After years of time and tide the pathway has morphed into the landscape and become an intrinsic part of its surrounds, and I think it’s this gentle, symbiotic meeting of man and nature that made this such an unforgettable moment in which to capture this inspirational image.
