INTERCEPTION

I have always had a profound fascination with night skies, and consider the Milky Way as one of the most beautiful. Knowing there is a vastness of space and uncharted worlds out there has forever intrigued me.

Being familiar with the area from previous explorations, I knew the exact location I wanted to setup and shoot, but this time it was beyond freezing!

This venture began in total darkness of the wee night hours. After extensive hiking, with tripod, camera and star tracker in place, clouds began to gather just as the rising sun cast its warm glow over the snow-capped mountains. I waited to greet the morning sun and capture the twilight as the nocturnal pitchslowly turned to dawn.

A 30-second exposure not only encapsulated the Milky Way revealing her beauty through the lens as her image dissipated into the advancing light, it also revealed the bonus phenomenon of dense snow retention in the conifers below known as “interception.”

Just as I intended to intercept the brief morning moment of the Milky Way beaming her light to Earth, this stately stand of evergreens proudly held the fallen snow for sublimation…a moment I shall never forget.
