NAMAKA PO

NAMAKA PO • BIG ISLAND HAWAII
45 Artist Proof • 495 Limited Edition

Namaka Po” translates to “Namaka Night.” Namaka is the Hawaiian goddess of water and the sea.

In Hawaiian legends, Namaka is the older sister of Pele, the god of volcanoes and fire and the creator of the Hawaiian Islands. The strong composition of this wave draws one in like a glimpse of an entrance to a long-sought-after treasure grotto. On this clear, cloudless evening, it seemed the Hawaiian gods presented something out of this world. A longer exposure enabled even distant stars and the nebulae of the Milky Way to reveal themselves clearly. Opting for a long exposure creates a softer impressionistic feel of the sea, which helped achieve the desired effect. At length, I finally framed up this wave in the pitch black of night, and in the end, got the shot.

I truly felt the presence of the goddess Namaka, showing off her moves in the water with only the stars above spotlighting her performance just for me. When perceiving this image, I hope you can feel the magic of Hawaii as I did that evening.
