PHARE WEATHER

PHARE WEATHER • SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA
45 Artist Proof • Limited Edition 495

I had been shooting the California coast for several days. This morning, I arrived early dawn at the Santa Cruz lighthouse in complete darkness, made my way down to the shore, not able to see more than a few feet in front of me, guided only by the distant lighthouse casting its eerie enchanted beam.

Lighthouses to me are the erstwhile guardians of the ocean, radiating a beacon of hope, of location and thus mapping the way. This morning added precisely what I was hoping for, a mysterious but peaceful, surreal feeling. I felt a connection with the scene and quickly set up my gear as the pending performance lighted in front of me.

The scene was moving fast, the fog was lifting and the sunlight began to pierce through. I fired off a series of shots with fingers numb, soaked by the salt spray rising up from the Pacific. Minutes later, as the fog cleared and the lights went out, it was like a different place.

The product made it all worth it. I absolutely love this shot. The texture and color of the crashing waves creates a surreal foreground, with the lighthouse as the focal point, symbolizing hope and life. There is always a way through.

This magical moment…captured!
