I have often said that a perfect sunny day can all too often yield but a perfectly boring shot, which inspires me to be more alert for clouds and moody weather. After a couple of days of smokey skies at and around Lake Tahoe due to the distant and adjacent fires, a summer storm was approaching.
The moment was developing. As the clouds began to roll in, they added a dramatic touch to the deep blue sky, enhancing the natural beauty of the lake. They created the sharp contrast and depth I was chasing for this shot, while also providing better light to bring out the rich turquoise hues of the lake.
Shot from an isolated perch on the edge of a cliff after driving around for hours and at length stumbling across this virtually ideal location, the luminous waters around Lake Tahoe seemed to magnify the random and mysterious patterns of old granite rocks lying under the surface.
Snapping the shutter punctuated the warm embrace of the sun and the cool breeze against my skin, commanding the concatenation of what must have been hundreds of shots and for me, this exhilarating experience.
The title of this image, “DAOWAGA” means “edge of the lake” in the language of the original Washoe Native Americans who lived here for thousands of years.
Capturing it was a moment that I can still clearly recall each time I look at or recall this photograph, inspiring the subsequent creation…or revivification…of a fanciful story containing this image…the pursuit of an invitation to seek and travel into a carefree time and space, where troubles fade away, culminating in escape to ultimate peace and harmony.
